Me and my dog on a beautiful fall day

About Nina

Hi! My name is Nina Spiegle. From a very early age, I found joy and satisfaction in caring for animals. When I was in the third grade, I told my mother that I wanted to take over the responsibility of caring for our family dog, Kiska, a shepherd/husky mix my parents adopted in Alaska when I was 3 years old. My mother still recounts how she never had to remind me, not even once, of those responsibilities that took me into high school.

My love for all animals was nurtured by my parents throughout my childhood. When we moved into our newly built home in the Midwest, I was 8 years old. One day soon after we moved in, I was exploring the basement on my own and discovered an open box of mouse poison in the furnace room. Not wanting to touch the poison or defy my parents, I found a piece of plywood and wrote this message for the mice; “DEAR MICE, DO NOT EAT THIS. IT WILL KILL YOU.” My parents found that message and removed the poison. Years later they still had my plywood warning addressed to the mice.

My father would take us kids on wilderness treks around our home, and on one such snowy trek he inspired me to write my first “book”…actually more of a short story but to a 10 year old it felt like a book. We had run across a bunch of raccoon tracks in the snow and my father suggested “these tracks tell a story…wouldn’t it be fun to write about that story?” That evening, with Jack London as my influential backdrop, I went into my bedroom and wrote “Raccoon Kingdom”.

My all time favorite job was working as a zookeeper.  I cared for a variety of animals, including primates, camels, zebras, bats, wolves, birds of prey and many others. I was in heaven spending my days interacting with, feeding, and cleaning up after these beautiful creatures. I still cherish those times and visit those memories often

Fast forward to today. I live with, love and care for my three dogs: Maya, a Doberman/Boxer mix, Rue, a Coolie, and Sage, my multi mix sport dog. They are an active bunch and really keep me on my toes on a daily basis. We enjoy a variety of activities including agility, flyball, hiking, bikejoring, trick training, swimming and more. I am a fairly adventurous raw feeder and also enjoy creating and cooking healthy meals for my girls.

From Kiska to Sage, I have learned and grown (literally and figuratively!).  Each and every one of my dogs, past and present, occupies a special place in my heart. I wish every one of them would live forever. My desire is to make their lives as long, healthy, and interesting as possible.

I see this blog as a place to share our adventures, goals, challenges, and knowledge. A place to learn and grow with my dogs, our friends and our followers.

Meet Nina's Pack

Maya is my 11 1/2 year old Doberman/Boxer mix.  Maya is the one with the great sense of humor, most often at my expense.  She is free spirited and fun loving, but can become all business when her job requires her to do so.

Maya’s favorite activities are trailing, lure coursing, agility, disc, swimming, hiking, trick training, and fitness training.

Rue is my 7 1/2 year old Coolie.  Rue is the definition of focused!  She would go 24/7 if allowed.

Rue’s favorite activities are human remains detection, agility, disc, swimming, trick training, fitness training, and retrieving anything that will keep the game going.

Sage is my 2 1/2 year old mixy mix.  My first small dog, but don’t let her size fool you.  Sage is up for anything and excels at all!

Sage’s favorite activities so far are flyball, agility, disc, swimming, hiking, trick training, and fitness training.
